One of the most beloved and renown USA Hockey camps kicked off this afternoon as players from the 2003 birth year representing Northern Plains, Pacific and Rocky Mountain Districts descended on Colorado Springs for the 2017 Western Regional High Performance Camp.
Now in its sixth year of existence, camp co-directors Flint Doungchak and Bruce Urban have cultivated an incredibly unique environment that fosters learning, development, and growth, both athletically and personally.
The day started with players slowly trickling in to Colorado College's Loomis Hall, the home dormitory for both players and staff at this year's WRHP Camp. Players were promptly greeted by their respective team leader before receiving their gear for the week, which included a jersey, matching socks, shorts, shirt, drawstring bag, water bottle, and towel.
From there, players split up with their respective teams to dive into icebreakers and team building before then enjoying their first team meal together at the dining facilities of Colorado College. Following dinner, all camp players and staff journeyed to Armstrong Hall where ADM Regional Manager Joe Bonnett set the tone for the week with a stirring speech that also touched on some of the forward-thinking rule changes that have been implemented at the Western Regional High Performance Camp.
On-ice action begins tomorrow with morning practices followed by the first slate of games in the afternoon. Later in the day, players will participate in the first seminar of the week, an hour-long talk centering around the opportunities available in midget, prep, junior and college hockey.
