Frequently ASKED QUEstions
General
What is the Western Regional High Performance Camp (WRHPC)? The Western Regional High Performance is a selective Player Development Camp that has been developed in coordination with the Pacific, Northern Plans, and Rocky Mountain Districts as well as USA Hockey.
Why is there not a National Camp at this age group? USA Hockey discontinued the national 14 Boys camp in 2011. It was determined that a player who is 13 or 14 years old is too young to be identified or scouted for National Team consideration and the focus of camps at these ages should be on development.
Where is the camp held? The camp will be held at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO.
When is the camp? The camp starts on Monday, June 12 with check-in starting at 3:00 PM. The camp will complete on Saturday, June 17 by 1:00 PM.
Who will be coaching? The camp staff will consist of NHL, USA Hockey, College, Junior, and Prep School coaches. Team Leaders will be selected from participating affiliates.
What is the format of the camp?
The camp will be very similar to a USA Hockey National Select Camp. The players will be placed on teams upon arrival. There will be two ice sessions per day with additional off ice sessions and seminars. The emphasis of the camp will be on player development and education.
How much does the camp cost?
The cost is $835 per player and includes housing, meals, ice, coaching, seminars, Jerseys and socks as well as transportation to and from the airport. Participants will be responsible for travel to Colorado Springs or the Denver Airport. Although not necessary, players are encouraged to have a small amount of spending money.
Can parents attend?
Yes, parents can attend. All ice sessions and seminars will be open to the parents. If parents attend, they will be responsible for their own housing, transportation and meals (the dorms are not available to the parents). Parents will have VERY LIMITED access to their sons during the camp as all participants will be under the care of USA Hockey in a team environment. Players will be very busy. You may be able to see your son just before and after the on-ice sessions.

How do I qualify for the Regional Boys 14 High Performance Camp? Each affiliate in the Rocky Mountain (AZ, CO, ID, NM, OK, TX, UT), Pacific (AK, CA, HI, NV, OR, WA) and Northern Plains (MT, ND, SD, WY) Districts of USA Hockey have been given allocations to the camp.
Each affiliate will hold tryouts and invite the qualified and selected players to the camp. Most of the tryouts will be held in conjunction with each affiliate’s tryouts for their District Player Development Camp. Players in the Northern Plains District (MT, WY, ND, SD) will be required to attend the District Camp in order to qualify for the Select 14 High Performance camp.
Where do I tryout? Each player must go through the affiliate where his permanent residence is. It does not matter where the player plays: the determining factor is where his permanent residence is. If you have a problem making your affiliate camp, please get in touch with your affiliate and try to make other arrangements. Contact your affiliate and your district player development representative for details.

At Camp
How does the Check-In progress work? Check-in starts at 3:00 PM at South Hall on the Colorado College Campus. You may park in the parking lot next to South Hall entrance during drop-off. The registration area is well marked. Players must have all of their forms (found at the registration website) completed online before check-in.
Players will be introduced to their coaches and team leaders, pick up camp materials (jerseys, keys, etc.), and checked into their dorms. Due to space constraints, parents will not be allowed into the check-in area. Parents will be able to visit the dorm areas (including the dorms) during the check-in window. Parents must clear the dorm (inside of secure doors) by 5:00 PM of check-in day. After that point, access by parents to any area inside the secure doors is strictly prohibited.
Once a player is checked into camp, that player is not allowed to leave camp (even for local residents) until the end of camp (or officially checked out of camp early). All players must stay on campus during camp.
What should you bring to camp? Bring your hockey gear including spare sticks. We highly suggest that you bring spare blade steel (as supplies are limited in the area). You will also need clothes for duration of camp. There are laundry facilities on site. The weather is generally warm (80s and dry), so we suggest that you pack shorts and comfortable shirts. There is no need for formal (non-athletic) attire.
You will also need to bring general toiletries such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.
You may wish to purchase additional small snack items such as water, sport drinks, crackers, etc. but it is not necessary and discouraged.
There is no need to pack sheets, pillows, towels or any dorm items they are provided by the College.
The camp will send you a general checklist as the camp approaches.
What is dorm life like during the week? All the dorms will be in South Hall on the Colorado College campus. Each player will generally have one roommate but no more than two (in rare cases). Bathrooms and showers are centrally located on each floor and there will be no college students in the dorms during our stay.
Each dorm has beds, desks, a small refrigerator and microwave. Each player will be provided with a pillow, linen, sheets, and towels. It is a good idea to bring an extra towel to use at the rink for showering after a practice or a game.
The dorms do not have air conditioning and players ARE NOT allowed to bring their own cooling devices (portable AC unit, evaporative coolers, etc.) Fans are provided by the college for each room.
Each team is arranged in adjacent rooms and the coaches and team leaders are also housed in the same area.
Players will eat in the on-campus cafeteria three time per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Each team has a different meal schedule. The cafeteria is very modern and offers a wide variety of quality and healthy food. They also accommodate players of varying dietary requirements. Please make sure to notate any special food requirements during registration.
Can I request teammates? No. The camp directors arrange teams based on a variety of factors including geographic diversity. The goal of the camp is to introduce players to new experiences and to create conditions that mimic the process and structure of future National Camp Selection Camps.
Can I select roommates? No. For similar reasons above, the Camp Directors will select the placements of roommates.
Where do players store gear during the week? Player gear is stored in their room during the week and they will carry their gear to and from the rink each day. Sticks will be stored in a secured area at the rink each night.
Are there off-ice training session? Yes. There are off-ice portions of the camp and players should plan their attire accordingly. Bring appropriate (tennis shoes), and comfortable clothing?
What the seminars? Seminar topics range in subjects and include Opportunities in Hockey, Nutrition, and Strength and Conditioning. Parents are invited to attend the seminars.
Will there be skate sharpening? Yes. Skate sharpening will be available on campus all week. The cost is $10.
Will players be allowed to leave campus? No. Players are not allowed to leave campus. During camp, there will be activities (such as the USA Hockey Headquarter Tour) where they will leave campus but they will leave with their team and with supervision. Players are NOT allowed to leave with their parent or guardian at any time during camp.
Is there Internet access? Yes. Monitored Internet access is provided to the players and staff during camp.
